Ibn Arabi’s Fusus al-Hikam: The Holy Wisdom of Enoch (Idris) | Divine Eminence & Unity in Multiplicity In this video, I offer a commentary on “The Holy Wisdom (al-Hikmat al-Qudūsiyyah) in the Essence of Enoch (Idrīs)”—a chapter where Ibn Arabi reveals the essential nature of Divine Eminence (ʿUluww) and the unity that underlies multiplicity. Through esoteric interpretation (tawīl), he explores how God’s Eminence is not a matter of place or position, but of Essence.

What happens when love transcends reason, logic, and even the fear of death? In this episode, we explore Rumi’s Masnavi narrative of the exiled servant whose longing for his king isa metaphor for the soul’s yearning for the Divine Beloved. A loyal servant of the king of Bukhara is falsely accused and forced into exile. For ten years, he wanders through deserts and mountains, burning with longing. At last, unable to endure separation, he resolves to return—though it may cost him his life. His friends warn him: the king may imprison or execute him. But he insists on going back: "Better be prisoned in love than free in exile." Finally, advisor comes to him warning him of the grave danger that awaits him. The servant replies: ...

In this episode of the Shi‘i Mysticism Podcast, we explore one of the most beloved poems in Persian literature about Imam Ali: Humāy-i Raḥmat (The Auspicious Bird of Mercy) by Shahriar Tabrizi, explaining the poem’s mystical, philosophical, and spiritual insights. In this remarkable ghazal, Shahriar presents Imam ʿAli not merely as a historical figure but as a mirror reflecting the divine Attributes—a manifestation of mercy, justice, wisdom, and spiritual authority. Drawing on Islamic theology, Shiʿi spirituality, and mystical symbolism, the poem portrays ʿAli as the gateway to deeper knowledge of God, echoing the famous prophetic saying: “I am the city of knowledge, and ʿAli is its gate.”

In this video series, I examine Ibn Arabi's chapter on Seth through the commentators. Every reception discloses the receiver’s ontological capacity. The mirror image, the two bricks, the hierarchy of seals, and the paradox of knowing and not knowing are not metaphors but technical claims about how manifestation works.
Episode 6: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUvZJOy0FOg
Guiding questions:
Key Concepts: tanzīh and tashbīh
What do tanzīh (transcendence) and tashbīh (immanence, comparability, similarity) mean in Ibn ʿArabī’s thought?
How are tanzīh and tashbīh grounded in different faculties—reason vs. imagination?
Why does Ibn ʿArabī insist that both must coexist to achieve a full understanding of the divine?
Noah’s Prophetic Call
How does Ibn ʿArabī interpret Noah’s emphasis on tanzīh in his mission?
Why does he see Noah’s call as ultimately unsuccessful?
How does Ibn ʿArabī distinguish between the truth of the message and the method of the call?
Why does Ibn ʿArabī regard pure tanzīh as “ignorance upon ignorance”?
The Criticism of Prophets
Why is the Chapter of Noah one of the rare places where Ibn ʿArabī openly criticizes a prophet?
How does he connect prophetic “failure” to the methodology of daʿwah (invitation) rather than to divine truth?
Community Capacity and Prophetic Function
How does Ibn ʿArabī link the success of a prophet to the capacity of the ummah (community)?
Why does he view the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as the Perfect Human (al-insān al-kāmil) in contrast to Noah?
In what way does the Qurʾān’s comprehensiveness reflect the Prophet’s balance of tanzīh and tashbīh?
True Knowledge and Ḥayrah (Bewilderment)
According to Ibn ʿArabī, what is the final goal of tanzīh?
Why does he see ḥayra (bewilderment) as the highest form of knowing God?
Balance and Theological Lessons
What theological lesson does Ibn ʿArabī draw from Noah’s one-sided reliance on tanzīh?
How does the Qurʾān itself demonstrate the balance of tanzīh and tashbīh (e.g., “There is nothing like unto Him, yet He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing”)?
How might this dual affirmation shape our own way of speaking about God today?

Guiding questions:
Fixed Entities and Knowledge – How does Ibn ʿArabī explain the relationship between a human’s fixed entity (ʿayn al-thābita) and God’s Knowledge of that person?
Divine Grace and Unveiling – Why does Ibn ʿArabī insist that even if humans can access their own fixed entity, this knowledge remains ultimately dependent on divine Grace and unveiling?
Pre-creation vs. Post-creation Knowledge – What distinction does Ibn ʿArabī make between God’s pre-creation knowledge of fixed entities and humans’ knowledge of them after creation?
Continuity of Prophethood and Sainthood – In what sense does Ibn ʿArabī draw a parallel between Seth’s continuation of Adam and sainthood (walāya) as the continuation of prophethood?
Prophets and Saints – How does Ibn ʿArabī describe the shared ground and hierarchy between Prophets (nabī/rasūl) and Saints (awliyāʾ), especially regarding the “Seal of the Prophets” and the “Seal of the Saints”?
Self-knowledge and Divine Knowledge – How does Ibn ʿArabī interpret the famous hadith “Whoever knows themselves knows their Lord,” and how does he connect it to the notion that the fixed entity reflects divine Names?
The Maʿrif and Realization of Realities – What does Ibn ʿArabī mean by describing the ʿārif (the realized knower) as one who perceives beings through their realities, and how does this deepen the idea of knowing God through knowing oneself?
